WhatsApp to stop working on some select phones from Jan 1

WhatsApp itself has been around since 2009 and has slowly added more and more features, such as end-to-end encryption and video calling. Because of its cross-platform support it has become the most popular messaging platform in the world.

From January 1st 2018, WhatsApp will stop working on some phones.

They include phones that run BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 10 or Windows Phone 8.0

This was contained via a blog post that read, ” While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future.

“This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp.

“If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone.”

“This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp.”

Lottery winner celebrates in 22 countries, beds 150 women in three years

A 31-year-old man who won an incredible £1,000,000 in 2014 has gone on spending and partying sprees, even as he confessed to having bedded a whopping 150 women in three years.

Metro reports that Matt Myles embarked on a globe-trotting trip with his brother and friends in 2014 after scooping an incredible £1,000,000 on the EuroMillions win in April that year.

He splurged an eye-watering half a million pounds in 18 months, spending money on champagne, clothes and living a party lifestyle in 22 countries.

But his mother warned him of the dangers of spending all of his cash; and with fears of ending up flat broke, he turned his life around.

And now he is overjoyed to be a dad, and says that ‘life is great’ after becoming engaged to his best friend and increasing his wealth through his business.

Matt, from Hereford, met 28-year-old Stacy in August 2016 and after a whirlwind romance, jetted off on a round-the-world trip with her in April this year.

But shortly into their trip, Stacy, from Ludlow, Shropshire, fell ill, and doctors in Beijing told her she was pregnant.

Matt said, “It was good to go around with the boys to experience the world as a single lad, but this time, with the trip with Stacy, I got to see things and travel with someone I cared about.”

The trip with Stacy ended in Bali, a symbolic place, as that is where Matt started his wild bachelor life back in 2014.

He added: “That was the start and the end of my bachelor life. That was the first place I flew to when I won the money; so it was fitting to be the place to end our trip.”

Matt went on one final ‘blow out’ with friends to Las Vegas in August to see the Floyd Mayweather versus Conor McGregor boxing match.

Kenya bus crash kills at least 30

At least 30 people were confirmed killed and several others injured when a bus collided with a truck on a road in central Kenya, the country's President said.

The crash happened early Sunday as the Nairobi-bound bus was traveling along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.

In a statement, President Uhuru Kenyatta expressed his condolences to the families and friends of passengers involved in the road accident at Migaa near Molo, a town in Nakuru County north of Nairobi.

"The President said it was unfortunate that many Kenyans have continued to lose their lives in road accidents, which can be avoided," the statement read.

The fatal accident took place in the early hours on Sunday.

Twenty-eight bodies had so far been recovered from the bus wreckage as well as the body of the truck driver, according to the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC).

Rescue operations continued at the scene of the accident, with injured passengers transported to Molo Sub-County Hospital and Nakuru Level Five Hospital for treatment, KBC reported.

President Kenyatta wished the injured a quick recovery and called upon drivers to be vigilant on the roads over the holiday period.

"Let us all be responsible this festive season, and more so, those of us who are driving," Kenyatta said, according to the statement.

Lecturers Jittery As Investigative Panel Demands Account Details

A Visitation Panel set up to investigate allegations of fraud in 11 federal Universities and Federal Polytechnics, including the University of Benin (UNIBEN) and the Auchi Polytechnic, is set to demand for the multiple bank account details allegedly being operated by the respective institutions in defiance of the Treasury Single Account (TSA), as directed by the federal government.

It was reliably gathered that the Panel’s request for the bank accounts in the case of the University of Benin, is based on the terms of reference and the allusion to their existence by a petitioner who is also a member of staff.

The petitioner had in the letter she sent to the EFCC, ICPC And the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja, alleged that the accounts violated the Presidential directive on the Treasury Single Account (TSA).

The Petitioner alleged that, “there is a lot of money in these illegal accounts and there may be need for an external forensic audit of the institution’s account in order to ensure financial prudence and accountability.

“This is because much of the subventions for the University between 2015 and 2017 from the Federal government and the additional Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), running into billions of Naira, from various business ventures and activities domiciled in these secret accounts.”

The Petitioner also insisted that the accounting process or procedure of the University of Benin must also be audited, as, “the Bursary department still rely on analogue mode of operation, with its attendant challenges and risks.

“When the Federal government said you must have single account, you cannot have various accounts. If you have various accounts what are they for? It amounts to violation of the relevant policy designed to promote transparency in the running of public organizations in Nigeria.”

Recall that the Minister of Education Alhaji Adamu Adamu, recently inaugurated the 11 visitation panels in Abuja and listed affected institutions as Federal University Dutsin-Ma, Katsina state, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in Abia state and University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom state.

Others are the Federal University Kashere, Gombe state, University of Abuja, FCT and University of Nigeria, Enugu state, Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo state, University of Benin, Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra state, Yaba College of Technology, Lagos state and University of Calabar, Cross River state.

It will also be recalled that postgraduate students of the University of Benin recently accused the institution’s management of operating an illegal bank account titled, “Uniben Staff Retreat/External Assessors.”

They alleged that they were being forced to pay the sum of between N60,000 and N90,000 as Masters and PhD students respectively, into the account all in the name of the university paying for External Examiners for project/oral defence.

He reckoned that Buhari will do everything within his power to ensure the corporate existence of the country as an indivisible entity.

“President Muhammadu Buhari believes in one Federal Republic of Nigeria. He does not believe that any LGA or state should suffer.

“The FG will ensure that funds are adequately appropriated to all accordingly. Funds that are supposed to go to state governments are equally given to them.

“Therefore under the leadership of President Buhari, no state will be cheated,” he assured.

Why I named my pet snake Toke Makinwa – Pretty Mike Reveals

Popular Lagos club owner, Pretty Mike, is in the news again for another controversial reason. A few weeks ago, he decided to get himself a new pet and opted for a python.

After he acquired the snake, he took pictures of himself bathing with the reptile and also announced the name of the snake as Toke Makinwa.

Many people took to his Instagram page to express their displeasure over the naming of the snake after a popular on-air personality and author.

However, in a chat with Saturday Beats, the popular socialite explained why he named the python, Toke Makinwa.

He said, “I named my pet snake Toke Makinwa because every Toke Makinwa is a snake. I named my pet python Toke Makinwa because I believe that she is not just a snake, but a huge snake – a python. And this is based on some things she talks about and writes on. There is a lot of cunningness and sneakiness to her.

“She is not your normal lady and it is time to let people know. Some people attacked me that why would I name my snake after her but the truth is that the name is patented and she does not have the right to the name. She is not the only Toke Makinwa in the world; there are so many of them. She might be the more popular one but right now, my pet python is even more popular than her.

“The truth is that we did not have any issue before I named the snake Toke Makinwa. She is my very good friend and I have seen her on some occasions. She understands that this is pure entertainment and as entertainers, we could diss ourselves in public but because we are entertainers, we know that when we are behind closed doors, we would talk to each other and settle any issue.

“We would see ourselves and say something like, ‘Mike that was a nice one.’ That is the beauty of the maturity entertainers have. We can do whatever we like in public, but behind closed doors, we know it is just for the show. I met her once after the news broke that I named my python Toke Makinwa and the reception I got from her was nice. She just said, ‘Hey Mike, you want them to hear our voice in Lagos State.’ And I told her that it is what we are in the business for. I even plan to have a ‘meet, greet and take a picture with Toke’ I would take my python out and people would have the opportunity of taking a picture with her (sic).”

He shared his reason for acquiring a python as a pet in the first place instead of a dog or a cat like some other people would have opted for.

He said, “I think that a lot of people do not understand the python. In our culture, we were taught that snakes are poisonous and dangerous but in the snake family, python is the only snake that has no venom, it is not poisonous. This is something I would like to educate people about. With the level of education in the country, we are still ignorant about certain things.

“I take a bath with the snake because it is my pet. I am sure a person is allowed to do whatever he likes with his pet. I take showers regularly with my pet; we eat together and go out together. It is my pet and I should not treat it lesser than I would do my pet puppy or cat. I feel like if I do that, I am discriminating against it (sic),” he said.

However, when Saturday Beats reached out to Toke Makinwa for her view on the issue, the OAP said she was about to begin a seminar and asked Saturday Beats to call back. After about an hour, Saturday Beats reached out to her but she did not pick her calls neither did she reply the text message sent to her.

Former Katsina Permanent secretary sentenced to 7 years imprisonment for fraud

A former Permanent Secretary in the administration of former governor of Katsina State, Ibrahim Shehu Shema, Yusuf Sule Saulawa was today December 29, 2017 convicted by Justice Sanusi Tukur of the Katsina State High Court of one count of Obtaining by False Pretense.

The convict fraudulently obtained the sum of N2,500,000 ( Two Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira Only) from the complainant while he was a Permanent Secretary attached to the office of the Deputy Governor of Katsina State on the pretext that the Office would award the complainant a contract for the supply of fertilizer to all the Local Government Areas in Katsina State.

Saulawa claimed that the money was for the purchase of bidding documents. It was further alleged that after obtaining the money, the convict cut all contacts with the complainant.
In the course of prosecution, EFCC counsel Sa'ad Hanafi Sa'ad called three witnesses and tendered many exhibits.

After both parties closed their case on the 3rd of October, 2017, final written addresses were adopted and the case was subsequently adjourned to December 29 for judgement.
In his judgement, Justice Tukur said he was convinced that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt and pronounced the accused guilty as charged.
Saulawa was accordingly convicted and sentenced to seven years imprisonment without option of fine.

Churches And Mosques To Pay Tax; Land Use Charge To Be Reviewed

Determined to jack up its internally generated revenue (IGR) for development by 100 per cent, a bill that would review Land Use Charge in the Lagos state has gone through second reading on the floor of the State House of Assembly during plenary yesterday.

The law tagged “A Bill for A Law To Repeal The Land Use Charge Law 2001 and Enact Land Use Charge 2017 and For Connected Purposes” was subsequently committed to the House Adhoc Committee on Finance headed by Hon. Yinka Ogundimu. According to the Speaker of the House, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, the law was all about increasing the revenue generation of the state.

Obasa observed that a situation where a few consultants were working with the state governments on the collection of land use charge was not good enough, calling for increase in the number of consultants.

He said: “We need more consultants to do the job so that the entire state could be covered in the collection of land use charge. Whatever tribunal that would be set wup to deal with offenders should have the support of the government. “On the issue of exemptions, we cannot exempt religious organisations because most of the worship centres are making money. We could only exempt Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).”

Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade had informed the House that the Bill would be going through second reading.

‘D’banj was not paid a dime to perform with Don Jazzy’

After long years of hiatus as a group since their fallout in 2012, former Mo’ Hits Records label stars: D’banj, Wande Coal, Don Jazzy, D’prince, Dr. Sid and K Switch, came together to deliver what can be described as an epic performance during Davido’s ‘30 Billion Concert’.

But since the stage performance, some people have speculated that the only way D’banj and Don Jazzy would have shared a stage is if money was involved. However, when PUNCH Saturday Beats reached out to D’banj’s camp, his manager, Frank, revealed how Davido made the feat possible.
Frank said,

“Let us not get things twisted, not a dime exchanged hands for any reason. The entire performance was not motivated by money at all. It was Davido’s initiative, he wanted it to happen at his show so he went for it and he got what he wanted. He spoke to all of the former Mo’Hits crew members individually, they saw his point and they granted his request. Davido is a good kid, he spoke to every member of the Mo’Hits crew. He thought about having a Mo’Hits reunion at his show and he got it.

“It was an exciting show and D’banj loved the performance. Davido made the request that they do a reunion at his show and D’banj simply honoured his request. He wanted the Mo’Hits crew to perform at his show because they were people he looked up to before his career started.

He made a request and they all agreed that it could be done. Before the performance, everybody was backstage having fun and when they were through with the performance, they all went to the green room and the atmosphere was a lovely one. I was there with them and if you had the opportunity to have seen them bond, you would not have even believed that they ever broke up. There was no awkwardness at all. It was the same ambiance that surrounded them when they were still Mo’Hits.”

"I don't care if people think she is older or richer than me'' - Iceberg slim speaks on his relationship with actress Juliet Ibrahim

Singer, Iceberg Slim, says he is not bothered if people think his girfriend, actress Juliet Ibrahim, is older or richer than him. In an interview with Punch, Iceberg said the opinion of other people on their relationship does not faze them. “We are actually the same age and she is not taller than me, except when she wears shoes with high heels. I don’t care if people think she is older than me or she has more money.

A relationship is shared between the two people involved in it so if anybody has anything to say about our relationship, they should feel free, but it does not faze us. I mean, even Jesus Christ was criticised, so who are we? Anybody can say anything about us because, at the end of the day, everybody has freedom of speech. Whatever they say does not faze us because we know what we saw in each other.”

On how they met and started a relationship, Iceberg Slim said: “I met Juliet Ibrahim in Durban, South Africa about a year and a half ago. We exchanged contacts and became friends. Our friendship later grew into an amorous affair and at the end of the day, we just became a happy couple.

The fact that we did not make our relationship a secret by posting our loved-up pictures online is because we are being ourselves. We chose not to follow the African mentality that you must keep your relationship secret because of the society or media. We are enjoying ourselves and getting to know each other as a couple. There is no reason why I should hide her; she is celebrating me because I love her and I am doing the same as well. This is not something we should hide.”

President Buhari signs 6 bills into law, including compulsory treatment for gunshot victims

President Muhammadu Buhari has signed into law six bills including the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act, 2017 and Anti-Torture Act, 2017

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Ita Enang, the bills signed into law include the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act, 2017 and Anti-Torture Act, 2017.

He explained that the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act, 2017 provided for the compulsory treatment and care for victims of gunshots and for related matters.

He said, “Specifically, the Act stipulates that a person with a gunshot wound shall be received for immediate and adequate treatment by any hospital in Nigeria with or without initial monetary deposit.

Furthermore, a person with a gunshot wound shall not be subjected to inhuman and degrading treatment or torture by any person or authority, including the police and other security agencies.

Anti-Torture Act, 2017 makes comprehensive provisions for penalising the acts of torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment, and prescribes penalties for the commission of such acts.”

The presidential aide added that Buhari assented to the Niger Delta Development Commission (Establishment) Amendment Act, 2017.

He explained that the Act included the gas producing and gas processing companies in the list of agencies that were contributing to the NDDC in addition to the oil companies in a bid to increasing the funding of the commission for effective discharge of its duties.

“Previously, the NDDC Acts excluded the gas companies. The Act makes it explicit that the Gas companies have to be included. This is to diversify the sources of funding for the NDDC for the economic wellbeing of the region,” he said.

Phone hacks: Protect your smartphones

More than two billion people now own a smartphone that essentially allows them to walk around with more computing power. However, the downside, of course, is that the more interconnected we become, the harder it is to maintain our privacy.

Phone hacking, according to Techopedia, is the practice of intercepting voicemails, phone calls or text messages, has taken centre stage in recent years. This is seen in the number of high profile and alarming cases of this cybercrime.

As the news emerges, each instance has raised deeper concerns about cybersecurity, a topic that many believe to be vital to personal, corporate and even national security.

Recognising this, policymakers are taking determined steps to combat these acts. That’s a start, but smartphone users should also take action to protect themselves. If you carry a smartphone, here’s what you should know.

How phone hacking works

In a rapidly paced digital world powered by the transfer of information, phone hacking seems inevitability. Whether it’s a competitor trying to steal secrets or tabloids looking for stories, there is always some persistent incentive for espionage. But how is it done? The answer may surprise you. In fact, all it takes is a little Internet software.

There is a lot of software available online that can help virtually anyone get access to call lists, contacts and text messages. However, most of these tools require direct installation, meaning someone would need access to your phone in order to download or upload the spyware.

More recently, hackers have found ways to access phones remotely. This process is a bit more complicated. One of the most common ways this is accomplished is by sending a text message or email with a corrupt link or picture. When the victim clicks on it, the malware secretly installs itself onto the phone, where it remains in the background, often undetected. From there, it can send off information to a third party including text messages and web history. This kind of software can even allow hackers to hack into a phone camera and control the phone’s microphone to listen in on conversations. The good news is that there are many steps that can be taken to prevent phone hacking.

The phone you love

There is evidence that some phones are more susceptible to hacking than others. Unfortunately, exactly which phones fit that description depends on who you ask. Android’s “fragmentation” has led many of its critics to believe that it’s more susceptible to hacking than its competitors.

In addition, the open-source code that gives Android its flexibility also makes security more difficult. This is mainly because savvy hackers have more access to the platform’s architecture and can design software specifically tailored to extract data. This problem is compounded by the fact that programmers are allowed to openly disseminate apps without restriction.

Apple’s iOS software has a more stringent app approval process coupled with more ingrained security measures. In theory, that should make iPhones harder to hack. Unfortunately, Apple isn’t hack-proof either.

The truth is that just about any phone can be hacked, a fact that has raised concerns in the tech community. Some of the responsibility for preventing such attacks lies with smartphone and app developers, but it certainly doesn’t hurt for users to take matters into their own hands.

What to do to prevent your phone from being hacked

There are many things that can be done to protect your phone from being hacked. Here are a few of the key precautions all smartphone users should take.

Download anti-virus software

Anti-virus software can detect and neutralise many forms of spyware that may be hiding in your smartphone. Be sure to download a reliable anti-virus app that can scan your phone for any harmful files that you may or may not have authorised.

Be careful about the apps you download

Many of the apps that are widely available to smartphone users come with intrusive spyware or malware. Make sure that you research each app before you download it to ensure there are no known issues with security.

Hold onto your phone

The easiest and most direct type of phone hacking is done to the physical phone itself. For this reason, it’s important to be careful about where you leave your phone, and to ensure that a password is required to gain access to it.

What to do if your phone has been hacked

Phone hacking is a form of unlawful surveillance and is considered a federal crime in many nations. If you suspect that your phone has been hacked, your first course of action should be to take your smartphone to your service provider.

Often times, they will be able to verify and even remove spyware and malware. They can also help you get in touch with pertinent law enforcement authorities if that’s required. Of course, you should also change all your passwords and contact any financial or other institutions where you have accounts that you think have been or may be compromised. Ultimately, wiping or replacing your phone may be the best course of action. Of course, that can be a pain, which is why preventing phone hacking is the best course of action.

We can no longer sell fuel at N145/litre — Marketers

Against the latest round of fuel scarcity rocking many parts of the country, private oil marketers are calling for government intervention to enable them to access foreign exchange at a special rate for the importation of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol), according to a reports

According to them, selling the product at N145 per litre is not longer feasible with the current exchange rate. Private marketers stopped fuel importation last year due to shortage of foreign exchange and increase in crude prices, which they said had made it unprofitable to import petrol and sell same at N145 per litre.

The National Operations Controller, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Mr. Mike Osatuyi, said, “The problem is that the importation (of petrol) is being handled almost 100 per cent by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation as private importers have backed out because the increase in crude price has made the landing cost enter subsidy.

When the crude price hit $59 per barrel, we could not sell petrol again at N145 per litre if we were importing on our own. It is only the government (NNPC) that is importing and can warehouse the subsidy.”

He said the government through the Central Bank of Nigeria should have intervened by providing foreign exchange at a special rate solely for the PMS importation for both the NNPC and private importers.

Osatuyi said, “Right now, the landing cost of the PMS is N154. If you are importing at N305 to the dollar, by the time you add bank charges, it comes to N307 to the dollar. If you apply that to the current crude price, the landing cost is N154-N155.

By the time you add all the margins, the pump price is about N160-N167. Before private importers can resume importation, the exchange rate to a dollar must be N250 and we can sell at the price of N145 per litre.”

The heartbreaking riches-to-rags plight of ex-Arsenal defender, Eboue

During an illustrious 7-year career in the Premier League, Emmanuel Eboue pocketed millions of pounds in wages, lived in a mansion and drove flashy cars, according to Mirror Uk.

Now the Ivorian spends his days hiding from bailiffs, sometimes sleeps on the floor of a friend’s home, travels by bus and even cleans his clothes by hand because he has no washing machine.

Today, the 34-year-old tells how his staggering riches-to-rags plight has pushed him to the brink of suicide. “I want God to help me,” he says. “Only he can help take these thoughts from my mind.”

At the peak of his career with Arsenal he became a fans’ favourite. He was part of the side that faced Barcelona in the 2006 Champions League final. Eboue, currently unable to play football because of ill-health, says he has been pushed to the brink.

He has: Lost a bitter divorce battle, with his wife Aurelie awarded all of their assets. Had to hide from cops and bailiffs after being ordered by a judge to transfer his remaining Enfield home to his wife.

Faced a heartbreaking estrangement from his three kids. His dream of a Premier League return with Sunderland evaporated last year, however, after he was hit with a 12-month ban by FIFA after a dispute with a former agent. Eboue says he was never given guidance to manage his finances.

Insisting his wife looked after most of their affairs, he admits being “naive” with money. He also claims he was beset by a string of people who gave bad advice and lost him huge sums.

With a limited education, Eboue is paying the price for being unaware of his financial situation.

And he now wants other young African footballers to learn from his mistakes. He says: “I look back and say ‘Emmanuel, you have been naive... why didn’t you think about that before?’ It is hard.

The money I earned, I sent it to my wife for our children. In Turkey I earned €8m. I sent €7m back home. Whatever she tells me to sign, I sign.

The problems with FIFA were because of people advising me. People who are supposed to care. But it was because of them FIFA banned me.”

Scarcity: NNPC To double Petroleum Products In the market

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) says it is intensifying efforts to flood the market with petrol and other products to ease scarcity pervading the country.

Many motorists and travellers had been groaning in pains in the last few days over the persistent fuel scarcity across the country.

The NNPC spokesman, Mr Ndu Ughamadu, said on Saturday in a statement in Abuja that already, six major marketers: Total, Forte Oil, Oando Plc, MRS, 11 Plc and NIPCO Plc, were loading products round the clock from their various depots in Lagos for onward trucking to other parts of the country.

”The supplies are mostly from cargoes of PMS imported by NNPC which are daily berthing, and immediately being made to discharge their products to stem the supply hiccups.

”The imported products are also being supplemented by supplies from the local refineries.

”NNPC assures Nigerians to remain calm and not to engage in panic buying as the end of the challenge is nigh.

”Marketers are strongly advised against hoarding as security agencies, working with industry regulators, will mete out appropriate sanctions to defaulters,” Ughamadu said.

The NNPC Group Managing Director, Dr Maikanti Baru, had earlier in the week, said that the corporation’s one billion litres of PMS cargo imports had started to arrive.

He said that supplies to various parts of the country had been doubled to 80 million litres per day since the current hiccup in the supply chain was noticed few days back.

House of Reps urges NAFDAC to ban sale of Tramadol, Codeine

The House of Representatives has enjoined the National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to immediately ban the sale of codeine and other ‘harmful’ drugs in the country.

Adopting a motion sponsored by Abdulsamad Dasuki (APC Sokoto), the lawmakers directed NAFDAC to ensure that codeine was only dispensed through prescription and only sold in hospitals.

Dasuki, while leading debate on the motion particularly stressed the need to stop abuse by banning the sale of codeine and tramadol over the counter and the need to address their abuse in northern Nigeria.

It is believed that about three million bottles of codeine are consumed in Kano and neighbouring Jigawa State.

He urged NAFDAC to introduce punitive measures against medical practitioners who sell opioid medications without a notarised prescription by a qualified medical doctor.

EFCC release Chief Innocent Chukwuma of Innosen Motors (See Details)

The Senate Committee on Financial Crimes and Anti-Corruption, on Wednesday, quizzed the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, over the arrest of the Chairman/Managing Director of Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing, Chief Innocent Chukwuma.

Magu, who appeared before the committee to defend the EFCC’s proposed budget for 2018, was questioned behind closed doors for about 30 minutes.

Stepping out of the venue, the EFCC boss confirmed to journalists that Chukwuma was arrested by the anti-graft agency.

He, however, declined to make further comments, promising that the commission would release a statement on the matter soon.

The EFCC later released Chukwuma on bail but accused him and his brother, Charles, of alleged involvement in a N1.4bn fraud.

Earlier on Wednesday, members of the Senate took turns to criticise the EFCC for the manner in which the industrialist was picked up on Tuesday in Enugu.

The lawmakers accused EFCC of highhandedness and adopting military approach in the execution of its duties.

They therefore mandated the Senate Committee on Financial Crimes and Anti-Corruption to investigate the matter and report back to the chamber on Thursday.

The Senate, however, rejected an additional prayer by Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, which was seconded by Senator Oluremi Tinubu, that the Committee on Women Affairs should investigate the alleged assault on Chwukuma’s wife by the EFCC operatives.

The lawmakers added the task to the terms of reference of the probe panel.

Operatives of the EFCC had stormed Chukwuma’s home at Savage Crescent in the GRA area of Enugu on Tuesday, during which some of the senators alleged that his wife was assaulted before the businessman was arrested forcefully.

The EFCC operatives, who were said to be accompanied by heavily armed policemen, stormed the building around 7.30am.

At the plenary on Wednesday, the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, raised a point of order to criticise the EFCC for the arrest, which according to him, is a private matter between a bank and its customer.

“If we reduce our security agencies to agencies of debt recovery, then we are doomed as a nation,” he stated.

Ekweremadu added, “I will like to seek your indulgence to raise the matter of Mr. Innocent Chukwuma, who we call ‘Innoson’, by the EFCC over a matter between Mr. Chukwuma and the Guaranty Trust Bank.”

Narrating details of his conversation with the Innoson boss, the Deputy Senate President said, “Yesterday, I got a number of messages indicating that Mr. Innocent Chukwuma was arrested by the EFCC over a transaction between him and GTB.

“This morning, I made an effort and I spoke with him. His story is straight forward: he said he was at his house at 5am on Tuesday when he heard gun shots and he thought they were assassins and he went into hiding.

“After about two hours, he saw some people and policemen, and he thought that help had come. So, he came out of his hiding and ran to a policeman who promptly arrested him. He tried to find out what his offence was and they told him that when they get to the police station, they would inform him of the offence. As of today, nobody has told him what the offence is.

“Any person, who is arrested and detained, should be informed of the reason for the arrest. As I speak, Mr. Innoson Chukwuma has yet to be informed of what led to his arrest or detention, but if you go through the media today, the story is that he is owing GTB.

“As a lawyer, I’m at a loss on how a transaction between someone and his bank will concern the EFCC.”

Ekweremadu described Chukwuma as one of the greatest industrialists in Nigeria and who has employed over 5,000 people.

He decried that such a man could be “bundled like a common criminal over a transaction between him and his bank.”

Senator Emmanuel Bwacha stated that if truly Chukwuma’s wife was slapped by an operative of the EFCC as Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe had alleged to have been told, “someone must be held to account; he must lose his job and he must be prosecuted.”

The Deputy Senate President added that the Innoson boss won a case he filed against GTB at a Federal High Court and won again at the Court of Appeal, while the matter was pending at the Supreme Court.

Speaking on the matter, Senator Barnabas Gemade said he would speak from the angle of “misuse of power and authority” by the EFCC.

He said bankers were feeding fat “like parasites” on the country’s economy.

Gemade noted that EFCC would not have taken the step if GTB had not presented a “cooked-up” report to the commission, “with specific inducement to go and deal with this man.”

Also, the Deputy Majority Leader, Senator Bala Na’Allah, said there were issues that had made the country to fall below “civic standards.”

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, in his remarks, said those who spoke on the matter raised important issues.

He said, “I think this does not speak well for the country. How would a private commercial transaction now become the focus of the EFCC? I think this is the area where our focus should be.

“Whether he owes (the bank) or not, we must be seen to be protecting the rights of individuals. I don’t think you have heard where FBI interferes in the affairs of Citibank and Fords Motors, or the financial crimes agency in the United Kingdom interferes in an issue between Barclay’s Bank and a customer.

“Honestly, we are just making a mockery of ourselves and we really need to be able to do the right things.”

Meanwhile, the Innoson Group, on Wednesday, said the EFCC lied in the reasons the anti-graft agency gave for the arrest of Chukwuma.

The EFCC had explained that Chukwuma’s arrest followed his “refusal to honour an invitation by the commission, having earlier jumped an administrative bail granted him in a case being investigated by the Capital Market and Insurance Fraud Unit of the commission’s Lagos office.”

The anti-graft agency added that Chukwuma brought six truck-loads of thugs, who manhandled its operatives when they moved to arrest him.

Reacting to the development, Innoson group, in a statement signed by the Head, Corporate Communications, Cornel Osigwe, said the anti-corruption commission lied in the reasons it gave for the arrest as well as in the account of what transpired during the incident.

Innoson group said Chukwuma was never invited by the EFCC.

Meanwhile, the EFCC has released Chukwuma but accused him and his brother, Charles, of perpetrating fraud to the tune of N1.4bn.

The commission said this in a tweet late on Wednesday.

According to the anti-graft agency, the brothers allegedly forged documents to secure tax waivers.

The tweet read, “The EFCC has released Chief Innocent Chukwuma, CEO of INNOSON on bail. Chukwuma and his brother, Charles (who is at large) are being investigated by EFCC’s Capital Market and Insurance Fraud Section for N1,478,366,859.66 fraud. He allegedly forged documents to secure tax waivers.”

How Five Men gang raped JSS2 female student, recorded it and shared online

A viral video capturing the moment four teenage boys gang-raped a girl in Ghana has sparked outrage on social media.

The boys overpowered the girl on the floor and took turns to rape her as she struggled for freedom. In the video, which is really painful to watch, one of the boys can be seen sitting by the girl’s head, with his hands around her neck to keep her in place even as she struggled.

As he did this, another naked boy is seen removing the girl’s underwear after which he parted her legs and tried to penetrate her.

At the point, the girl cries and struggles harder, even closing her legs tighter to prevent the boy from going ahead with his evil intentions.

The other boys are heard laughing as the girl struggles, and the boy holding her struggles even more to subdue her. Eventually, the naked boy had his way with the girl, after which he gave way for his friends to do same.

The video which lasted a little over two minutes is believed to have been recorded by one of the boys.

The incident reportedly happened in Kumasi the capital of Ashanti Region of Ghana and the rapists are reported to be speaking the Twi language. Concerned people have called on the Ghanaian police to investigate the incident right away and ensure the culprits are brought to book.

In a press release by the police, they acknowledged intercepting “a video of what appears to be a gang rape involving a young lady and at least five men.” “In view of the serious nature of the act, as shown in the video, a special investigation team has been constituted at the CID Headquarters to analyse the video with the aim of identifying those involved and arrested for the necessary legal processes to be activated,” they said.

They appealed to individuals with any information that will lead to the arrest of those involved to get in touch with their Cyber Crime unit of the CID Headquarters.

PS: If you want the video, please go search for it as I can't stomach putting it up here.

Medic warns women not to urinate before sex

Women should not urinate before sex to reduce the risk of developing a urinary tract infection (UTI).

According to one expert, this piece of advice, commonly heard among women, could even increase the chances of getting one. New York City urologist David Kaufman explained the idea females should pee before intercourse is one of the biggest misconceptions he has to address with patients in his clinic.

He stresses that urinating after sex is important, but warns going to the bathroom beforehand is not advisable. Indeed, he told Yahoo News that this mistake 'is the No.1 cause of post-coital urinary tract infections, also known as honeymoon cystitis'.

Why shouldn't you wee before sex? During intercourse, bacteria from the vagina can get pushed into the urethra. Waiting to pee, and consequently having enough urine stored up to create a strong stream, increases the odds of pushing that bacteria back out.

Dr Kaufman said that holding on will ensure your bladder is full enough to produce a stream strong enough to help clear any bacteria in the urethra. Without any urine in your bladder, the bacteria can cause an infection. If you don't go to the toilet after sex, the bacteria can make its way into the bladder and develop into an infection.

Unfortunately, women are far more susceptible to UTIs than men because of their anatomy. The female urethra is separated from the vagina and anus by just a small distance, making it easy for bacteria from either the vagina or bottom to reach it. And it is only two inches long – meaning bacteria does not need to travel far to reach the bladder.

Palestinian dressed as Father Christmas throws rocks at Israeli soldiers

A Palestinian demonstrator dressed as Santa Claus was seen throwing rocks at Israeli troops when a protest near the West Bank city of Ramallah turned violent today.

Clashes near between Israeli military and Palestinian protesters have been virtually non-stop since U.S. President Donald Trump decided to publicly recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on December 6.

Earlier today, Israels defence minister said the country is 'ready to pay the whole price' for Trump's move.

'It was clear to us that the US President's declaration (on Jerusalem) will have a price, and I repeat, we are ready to pay the whole price,' Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Tuesday.

Speaking during a visit to a military base near the Gaza border, he added: 'This determination (on Jerusalem) is important.

'We will not tolerate any leakage' of rockets fired from Gaza at Israel.'

At least 15 rockets or projectiles fired at the Jewish state from the Gaza Strip in the past two weeks.

A number have fallen inside the Palestinian enclave itself or been intercepted by Israel's missile defence systems, but a few have hit Israel.

They have caused minor damage but no injuries, although the attacks have raised fears of a new round of confrontation with Gaza's rulers Hamas, with which Israel has fought three wars since 2008.

The Israeli army believes the rocket fire from Gaza has not come from Palestinian fundamentalist group Hamas, with whom they currently have a ceasefire agreement, but from more radical Islamist groups, broadly called Salafists.

Lieberman said Hamas had arrested Salafists in recent days, but there has been no confirmation of this from Hamas.

Gov. Defends Approval Of $1bn To Fight Insurgency

Gov. Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa on Tuesday explained that the Governors’ Forum’s decision to grant Federal Government permission to utilize one billion dollars from the Excess Crude Account for security was taken in good fate.

The governor was reacting to the controversy surrounding the approval given during the last National Economic Council (NEC) meeting when he addressed state House correspondents.

The Bayelsa governor noted that the decision was not a political one but meant to strengthen the country’s security apparatus.

“It was a decision taken in good fate to support our security services, to strengthen our national security and enhance operations in the interest of everybody else.

“This is not a political issue and I thought that I should say that, but the details of what we would do and say and the clarifications will come at the end of the meeting of the governors.’’

Dickson said that the governors would meet later in the day to fine tune how to move the matter further, noting that there was a lot of unnecessary controversy on the approval in the media.

“There is a lot of unnecessary controversy out there in the media.

“After the meeting this afternoon, our chairman and some of us may have to talk to the media, may have the need to interact with the president and the vice president on it.

“These are issues of national security and I think that we leaders must be circumspect in terms of creating controversies on issues of national security.

“Our duty is to collaborate among ourselves, collaborate with the Federal Government on two critical issues of national security and issues of the economy, and that is what the NEC does.’’

Dickson stated that he came to consult the vice president, adding that the governors were also consulting to deal with the issues.

He said he would not prejudge the outcome of the meeting but was sure it would throw some further light in what was out there in the public domain.

On the recent assassinations and rise in crime in Bayelsa, the governor stated that increase in crime was a national phenomenon during the period of festivities

“It is a national phenomenon, especially at this time of the year; Bayelsa has been known for stability and peace in the last six years.

“That’s one area we have expended a lot of energy and resources and so we are concerned if there is any incident of criminal conduct not to talk of two, three, four or five.

“It is still within control but we are bothered about it.

“And we are working together and supporting the security forces, mobilising the citizens of the state and activating our structures and systems to ensure that we regain control of the security situation.

“So I assure all of you, I assure the country that Bayelsa is safe and stable.

“Security forces and community leaders are working together and there is a government that understands the role and the place of security which I lead.

“So, no cause for alarm, things are okay.’’

The governor acknowledged that he came to have discussion with the Vice President on issues of national interest and concern but which he was not in a position to divulge the details.
