90% of our pilots, co-pilots are Nigerians – Dana Air

Dana Air on Thursday said that 90 per cent of its pilots and co-pilots were Nigerians in line with the Executive Order on Local Content Procurement.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the airline’s Director of Flight Operations, Segun Omole, made the disclosure at the decoration of the five newly-trained pilots and co-pilots in Lagos.
Mr. Omole said the airline had boosted its Nigerian pilots from 20 per cent when it started to almost 90 per cent.
“When I joined Dana Airline, we were only two captains who were Nigerians while the rest were foreigners, and Dana believed that in the long run, they will have to transfer the management of the office to Nigerians,’’ he said.
Mr. Omole said that Dana Air had a total of 33 pilots comprising 16 captains and 17 co-pilots.
He said that 27 of them were trained and retrained in 2017 to meet up with the flight standard regulations.
“Of course, on the corporate side, it is a very expensive cost to train and retrain pilots every six months, and Dana Air has not shied away from the training,” he said.
Mr. Omole said the airline had been training its pilots year in, year out.
“We still have seven pilots that are still under training, and about a month from now, we will be doing more decorations,’’ he said.

Mr. Omole said the five pilots that were decorated had gone through various flight trainings in and outside the country.
He said that three of them were First Officers while the two pilots had been promoted to Captain.
According to him, Dana Air remains committed to safety and comfort of its passengers, and will continue to do that by building the capacity of its workforce.
While congratulating the pilots, he urged them to maintain the airline’s safety records and serve the best interests of passengers.
NAN reports that the trainees are Ayotunde Ilesanmi, Afolabi Damilola, Wahab Lawal, Ibrahim Kazeem and Slyvester Kalu.
One of the trainees, Slyvester Kalu, thanked the management on behalf of the trainees for giving them the opportunity to serve the airline better.
Mr. Kalu promised that they would always ensure safety standards for the benefit of the airline’s esteemed passengers.

Messi could leave on free transfer with current deal if clause triggered

Lionel Messi could leave FC Barcelona without a transfer fee if Catalonia ceded from Spain and the club did not compete in any of Europe’s top four leagues.

El Mundo, a leading Spanish newspaper, on Friday reported this, citing a clause in his new contract.

Barca’s all-time top goalscorer signed the contract in November, seven months before his old deal expired.

It runs until June 2021 and contains a 700 million euro (£623 million) buy-out clause.

But, according to the Spanish daily, it would also allow the five-times World Player of the Year to leave the club where he has spent his entire career for free.

This will be if Catalonia’s independence push resulted in Barca exiting Spain’s top flight, and not joining either the English Premier League, the Bundesliga or Serie A.

A Barca spokesman declined to comment directly on the report, but added: “In the interests of confidentiality, the club never comment on contracts signed with players and never will.’’

Messi’s management team could not immediately be reached for comment.

The political crisis triggered by Catalonia’s independence drive remains unresolved after separatists won a slim parliamentary majority in a regional election last month.

Argentinian Messi’s latest contract was signed on Nov. 25, before that vote.

But, after an autumn referendum on independence which authorities in Madrid declared illegal, it dissolved the region’s political institutions after they ratified it.

The referendum had direct ramifications for FC Barcelona who, on the day that it was held, chose to play their La Liga game against Las Palmas behind closed doors.

The decision was however in response to police violence against would-be voters.

Intel - Performance of security updates not significant

Intel Corp (INTC.O) said fixes for security issues in its microchips would not slow down computers, rebuffing concerns that the flaws found in microprocessors would significantly reduce performance.

Intel shares fell nearly 2 percent on Thursday as investors were worried about the potential financial liability and reputational damage from the recently disclosed security issues.

The largest chipmaker confirmed earlier this week that the security issues reported by researchers in the company's widely used microprocessors could allow hackers to steal sensitive information from computers, phones and other devices.

Security researchers had disclosed two security flaws exposing vulnerability of nearly every modern computing device containing chips from Intel, Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD.O) and ARM Holdings.

The first, called Meltdown, affects Intel chips and lets hackers bypass the hardware barrier between applications run by users and the computer's memory, potentially letting hackers read a computer's memory and steal passwords. The second, called Spectre, affects chips from Intel, AMD and ARM and lets hackers potentially trick otherwise error-free applications into giving up secret information.

Intel had said the issues were not caused by a design flaw and asked users to download a patch and update their operating system.

Intel may be on the hook for costs stemming from lawsuits claiming that the patches would slow computers and effectively force consumers to buy new hardware, and big customers will likely seek compensation from Intel for any software or hardware fixes they make, security experts said.

BREAKING NEWS - Gunmen kill five in fresh Rivers community attack

Barely four days after 17 persons were killed in an early morning attack in Rivers State, five persons have been reportedly killed in Egbeda, a community in Emohua Local Government Area of the state when unknown gunmen raided the area.

Though the police said only two persons were killed when the hoodlums stormed the place, a security source said security men crawled though the bush to chase away the bandits.

The source, who spoke with our correspondent in Emohua, explained that the gunmen wore black trousers and T-shirts with red caps, adding that they (gunmen) escaped when they noticed that some soldiers were trailing them through the bush in Egbeda.

He disclosed that the incident happened in the morning while villagers were preparing to move out for their daily engagement.

“Some unknown gunmen wearing black attire with red caps came to Egbeda this morning and killed five persons.

“We all crawled through the bush to get them, but they ran away when we got there,” the security source said.

Confirming the incident at Egbeda, the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Ahmed Zaki, told newsmen that one person was killed in Unyeada in Andoni Local Government Area of the state.

Zaki explained that the hoodlums, who shot and killed one person in Egbeda, came onmotorcycles, adding that security had been beefed up in the area.

Governor Wike places N200m bounty on perpetrators of Omoku massacre

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has placed a N200million bounty for information that will lead to the arrest of the gunmen who killed at least 14 churchgoers returning from a midnight service on Monday in Omoku.

The gunmen had opened fire on a set of worshippers at about 12:30 am on Monday,” said Ugochi Olugbo, a relative of one of the victims who were attending a New Year’s Eve service.

“Fourteen persons died on the spot, while 12 who sustained gunshot wounds were rushed to the hospital and are receiving medical attention,” said a police source who asked to remain anonymous.

Governor Wike spoke on Tuesday after he led the Rivers State Security Council on a fact finding/sympathy visit to the families of the deceased. He also visited those injured during the attack.

The governor also visited the sites of the crime where he received briefing from the Nigeria Police Area Commander, Mr Mike Nwafor, and the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni (ONELGA) Local Government Council Caretaker Chairman, Mr Olisa Osi.

He said: “We have placed a N200million bounty for relevant information that will lead to the arrest of all those involved in this unfortunate act of violence.

“Anybody who is connected to this crime in any way will have his/her houses forfeited to the Government. This place has been peaceful before this unfortunate mayhem.

“We will not allow another case of this violence. We have mobilised the security agencies to take the battle to the perpetrators “.

Governor Wike said all those linked to the Omoku violence will face the full weight of the law.

“You cannot shed innocent blood and go free. We are working with all the security agencies to do everything possible to arrest the perpetrators. They must pay for this”, he said.

The governor commiserated with the families of the deceased, saying that the State Government will support them in burying their loved ones. He added that the state government will also settle the medical bills of those receiving treatment at different hospitals.

He said: “I am pained by this unfortunate mayhem . Enough is enough. ”

The governor and the service commanders also visited the residence of wanted cultist, Don Danny where the Rivers State Governor commended security agencies for working hard to improve the security of the state.

Chairman of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, Mr Osi Olisa informed the governor that 17 persons lost their lives as a result of the attack.

In an interview, Prophetess Comfort Ordu who lost her husband and three of her children, said they were dragged out of their home and killed by the perpetrators.

Some of those murdered in cold blood include: Favour Odili, Saviour Amirinze, Augustine Ordu, Precious Ordu, Wisdom Ordu, Jennifer Ohia and Innocent Ohia. Others are: Reuben Idogu, Baby Idogu, Ngozi Ogbuanukwu, Oyi Ogadinma, Nwagaego Ogadinma and Uche Onige.

Governor Wike was accompanied to Omoku by the Brigade Commander of the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General A.A Bande, the Commander of Joint Task Force, Colonel M.N Madi, Rivers State Deputy Police Commissioner, Ahmed Magaji and Rivers State Director of the Department of State Services, Mr Tosin Ajayi.

Banks freeze accounts tied to cryptocurrencies

The surge of bitcoin last year has been unprecedented, for a digital currency that started at just over a thousand dollars in value(for one bitcoin) in January last year to an all time high of nineteen thousand in December, it has really been extraordinary.

With every successful venture there is bound to be hurdles and one of such is the fear that the Bitcoin may be used for fraudulent activities.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported over the weekend that Cryptocurrency trader and Youtuber Alex Saunders called out National Australia Bank (NAB), ANZ, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and Westpac Banking Corporation on Twitter for freezing customer accounts and transfers to four different bitcoin exchanges – CoinJar, CoinSpot, CoinBase and BTC Markets.

A spokesman from Commonwealth Bank confirmed the freezes by saying that "because the destination account previously has been connected to a fraud or an attempted fraudulent transaction or is an account used to facilitate payments to Bitcoins or similar virtual currency payment services".

Nanny Sent To Prison For Inserting Fingers Into 2 Girls’ Vagina

A 43 years old Nanny, Comfort Adeleke has been arrested and arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate Court for allegedly inserting her fingers into the private parts of the two female children of her employer and inflicted injuries on their private parts.

The two girls aged four years and 20 months old were entrusted in her care as a Nanny by the mother of the children.

A Police source said that the Female Divisional Police Officer, DPO in charge of Ilasan Division, Lekki, Lagos, SP Onyinye Onwuamegbu ordered Sgt Lucky Elele to arrest the nanny following a complaint by the mother of the victims.

Adeleke was arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrate Court, Lagos on a one count charge of inserting fingers into the vagina of a 4-year old and 20 month old children and caused them harm.

Police Prosecutor, Friday Mameh informed the court in charge No F/79/2017 that the accused committed the offence on 23 December, 2017 at Bamidele Eletu Street, Osapa- London, Lekki, where she lives with the complainant and the victims as a nanny.

Mameh told the court that the complainant reported to the Police that she left her two children in the care of the accused who is her nanny to work and that when she returned she discovered that her nanny had inserted her fingers into the private parts of her two children and inflicted injuries on their private parts.

Mameh said that the complainant further stated that following the ugly incident, she rushed her children to the hospital where doctors confirmed that her children’s private parts had been tampered with.

Mameh said the offence the accused committed is punishable under section 135 of the criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the alleged offence and her counsel, Loveline Ezemegbu urged the court to admit the defendant to bail in the liberal terms.

Chief Magistrate, Mr B.A Sonuga turned down the bail application and ordered that the defendant be kept at the Kirikiri Prison, Apapa, Lagos till 30 January, 2018 when the medical report of the alleged injuries sustained by the two victims would be revealed.

But shortly into their trip, Stacy, from Ludlow, Shropshire, fell ill, and doctors in Beijing told her she was pregnant.

Matt said, “It was good to go around with the boys to experience the world as a single lad, but this time, with the trip with Stacy, I got to see things and travel with someone I cared about.”

The trip with Stacy ended in Bali, a symbolic place, as that is where Matt started his wild bachelor life back in 2014.

He added: “That was the start and the end of my bachelor life. That was the first place I flew to when I won the money; so it was fitting to be the place to end our trip.”

Kenya bus crash kills at least 30

At least 30 people were confirmed killed and several others injured when a bus collided with a truck on a road in central Kenya, the country's President said.

The crash happened early Sunday as the Nairobi-bound bus was traveling along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.

In a statement, President Uhuru Kenyatta expressed his condolences to the families and friends of passengers involved in the road accident at Migaa near Molo, a town in Nakuru County north of Nairobi.

"The President said it was unfortunate that many Kenyans have continued to lose their lives in road accidents, which can be avoided," the statement read.

The fatal accident took place in the early hours on Sunday.

Twenty-eight bodies had so far been recovered from the bus wreckage as well as the body of the truck driver, according to the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC).

Rescue operations continued at the scene of the accident, with injured passengers transported to Molo Sub-County Hospital and Nakuru Level Five Hospital for treatment, KBC reported.

President Kenyatta wished the injured a quick recovery and called upon drivers to be vigilant on the roads over the holiday period.

"Let us all be responsible this festive season, and more so, those of us who are driving," Kenyatta said, according to the statement.

Lecturers Jittery As Investigative Panel Demands Account Details

A Visitation Panel set up to investigate allegations of fraud in 11 federal Universities and Federal Polytechnics, including the University of Benin (UNIBEN) and the Auchi Polytechnic, is set to demand for the multiple bank account details allegedly being operated by the respective institutions in defiance of the Treasury Single Account (TSA), as directed by the federal government.

It was reliably gathered that the Panel’s request for the bank accounts in the case of the University of Benin, is based on the terms of reference and the allusion to their existence by a petitioner who is also a member of staff.

The petitioner had in the letter she sent to the EFCC, ICPC And the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja, alleged that the accounts violated the Presidential directive on the Treasury Single Account (TSA).

The Petitioner alleged that, “there is a lot of money in these illegal accounts and there may be need for an external forensic audit of the institution’s account in order to ensure financial prudence and accountability.

“This is because much of the subventions for the University between 2015 and 2017 from the Federal government and the additional Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), running into billions of Naira, from various business ventures and activities domiciled in these secret accounts.”

The Petitioner also insisted that the accounting process or procedure of the University of Benin must also be audited, as, “the Bursary department still rely on analogue mode of operation, with its attendant challenges and risks.

“When the Federal government said you must have single account, you cannot have various accounts. If you have various accounts what are they for? It amounts to violation of the relevant policy designed to promote transparency in the running of public organizations in Nigeria.”

Recall that the Minister of Education Alhaji Adamu Adamu, recently inaugurated the 11 visitation panels in Abuja and listed affected institutions as Federal University Dutsin-Ma, Katsina state, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in Abia state and University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom state.

Others are the Federal University Kashere, Gombe state, University of Abuja, FCT and University of Nigeria, Enugu state, Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo state, University of Benin, Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra state, Yaba College of Technology, Lagos state and University of Calabar, Cross River state.

It will also be recalled that postgraduate students of the University of Benin recently accused the institution’s management of operating an illegal bank account titled, “Uniben Staff Retreat/External Assessors.”

They alleged that they were being forced to pay the sum of between N60,000 and N90,000 as Masters and PhD students respectively, into the account all in the name of the university paying for External Examiners for project/oral defence.

No state will be short-changed under Buhari’s leadership – Enang

The Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly (Senate), Sen Ita Enang, has said that every state of the federation will be treated fairly under President Muhammadu Buhari’s leadership irrespective of political ideology.

Speaking during the 2017 Ididep Day Celebration in his country home at Ididep in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State on Saturday, Enang noted that the president believes only in one Nigeria.

He reckoned that Buhari will do everything within his power to ensure the corporate existence of the country as an indivisible entity.

“President Muhammadu Buhari believes in one Federal Republic of Nigeria. He does not believe that any LGA or state should suffer.

“The FG will ensure that funds are adequately appropriated to all accordingly. Funds that are supposed to go to state governments are equally given to them.

“Therefore under the leadership of President Buhari, no state will be cheated,” he assured.

Enang appealed to Akwa Ibom people to support the present federal government, noting that the state had fared very well under Buhari leadership.

According to him, the federal government has approved the construction of Aba-Ekparakwa-Ette-Ikot Abasi Road in the 2018 budget to ease the transportation in the state and curb the rate of carnage on the road.

He added that rehabilitation and construction of Calabar-Itu-Ikot Ekpene highway had also been captured in the budget, assuring that the road will be completed soon.

Enang urged his community people to embrace peace and togetherness, irrespective of their political affiliations to bring development and progress to the area.

Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Iniobong Essien, said that rebuilding the community was a collective effort.

Essien urged the people to put political differences behind them while seeking for the progress of Ididep community.

He said, “Political parties will come and go but Ididep community will remain.”

He warned the youth against vandalism of government infrastructure in the area, stressing that with the lean financial resources, the government will not replace infrastructure destroyed by vandals.

Former Katsina Permanent secretary sentenced to 7 years imprisonment for fraud

A former Permanent Secretary in the administration of former governor of Katsina State, Ibrahim Shehu Shema, Yusuf Sule Saulawa was today December 29, 2017 convicted by Justice Sanusi Tukur of the Katsina State High Court of one count of Obtaining by False Pretense.

The convict fraudulently obtained the sum of N2,500,000 ( Two Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira Only) from the complainant while he was a Permanent Secretary attached to the office of the Deputy Governor of Katsina State on the pretext that the Office would award the complainant a contract for the supply of fertilizer to all the Local Government Areas in Katsina State.

Saulawa claimed that the money was for the purchase of bidding documents. It was further alleged that after obtaining the money, the convict cut all contacts with the complainant.
In the course of prosecution, EFCC counsel Sa'ad Hanafi Sa'ad called three witnesses and tendered many exhibits.

After both parties closed their case on the 3rd of October, 2017, final written addresses were adopted and the case was subsequently adjourned to December 29 for judgement.
In his judgement, Justice Tukur said he was convinced that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt and pronounced the accused guilty as charged.
Saulawa was accordingly convicted and sentenced to seven years imprisonment without option of fine.

Churches And Mosques To Pay Tax; Land Use Charge To Be Reviewed

Determined to jack up its internally generated revenue (IGR) for development by 100 per cent, a bill that would review Land Use Charge in the Lagos state has gone through second reading on the floor of the State House of Assembly during plenary yesterday.

The law tagged “A Bill for A Law To Repeal The Land Use Charge Law 2001 and Enact Land Use Charge 2017 and For Connected Purposes” was subsequently committed to the House Adhoc Committee on Finance headed by Hon. Yinka Ogundimu. According to the Speaker of the House, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, the law was all about increasing the revenue generation of the state.

Obasa observed that a situation where a few consultants were working with the state governments on the collection of land use charge was not good enough, calling for increase in the number of consultants.

He said: “We need more consultants to do the job so that the entire state could be covered in the collection of land use charge. Whatever tribunal that would be set wup to deal with offenders should have the support of the government. “On the issue of exemptions, we cannot exempt religious organisations because most of the worship centres are making money. We could only exempt Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).”

Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade had informed the House that the Bill would be going through second reading.

But since the stage performance, some people have speculated that the only way D’banj and Don Jazzy would have shared a stage is if money was involved. However, when PUNCH Saturday Beats reached out to D’banj’s camp, his manager, Frank, revealed how Davido made the feat possible.
Frank said,

“Let us not get things twisted, not a dime exchanged hands for any reason. The entire performance was not motivated by money at all. It was Davido’s initiative, he wanted it to happen at his show so he went for it and he got what he wanted. He spoke to all of the former Mo’Hits crew members individually, they saw his point and they granted his request. Davido is a good kid, he spoke to every member of the Mo’Hits crew. He thought about having a Mo’Hits reunion at his show and he got it.

“It was an exciting show and D’banj loved the performance. Davido made the request that they do a reunion at his show and D’banj simply honoured his request. He wanted the Mo’Hits crew to perform at his show because they were people he looked up to before his career started.

He made a request and they all agreed that it could be done. Before the performance, everybody was backstage having fun and when they were through with the performance, they all went to the green room and the atmosphere was a lovely one. I was there with them and if you had the opportunity to have seen them bond, you would not have even believed that they ever broke up. There was no awkwardness at all. It was the same ambiance that surrounded them when they were still Mo’Hits.”
